For almost two hundred years playing cards have been printed in Turnhout. Still today, the Turnhout-based company Cartamundi is the absolute world player in the production of playing cards and board games. The popular cardboard cards are not just for innocent fun. Think of fortune telling, satire, propaganda,
advertising. The museum shows this surprising use, but also focuses on the history of the playing card. Moreover, the card game is an alluring theme for artists. And they are only too happy to highlight the sinful behaviour of the players. Arguments, cheating, fraud: they say it is all part of a game of cards.
In the museum's machinery, you are immersed in the atmosphere of a 19th-century playing card factory. Authentic printing presses and graphic equipment illustrate the entire production process. Regularly, the sound of the impressive steam engine echoes through the building and on fixed days, passionate printers turn the presses on.
The museum also houses a high-tech graphic workshop. The machines are the state of the art in graphic and game design. A unique opportunity for designers who - by appointment - want to make a prototype. During school holidays, the youth studio often offers printing workshops to families. Finish your visit
with a game of cards in the cosy self-service café 'Vijven & Zessen'!
